Jackie here is a product of STI Balanga. But after six months of sending out resume, she’s still on a job search. What should she do to clinch an interview with prospective employers and eventually land in a job? Find out what our career advisers have to tell
Hi! I am Jackie, a newly grad of STI Balanga. I saw this career counseling section in the website so I thought of sharing to you my concern. I have been on a job hunt for more than six months now. I’ve sent my resume to more than thirty companies but until now, I haven’t received a call from any one of them. It seems that nobody is interested to hire me and I am starting to feel the pressure. I have a good academic record and I believe my resume contains impressive credentials. What could be the problem? How can I improve my chances of getting noticed, even only through my resume.? Please help…
Thanks,
Jackie
Dear Jackie,
Thanks for sharing with us your problem. Don’t feel bad if until now, you haven’t gotten any response yet from the companies. You are not the only person going through such dilemma. Remember that unemployment rate continues to rise due to several economic factors (but that’s another topic which we could discuss some other time). As such, the job market gets stiffer each day. But don’t lose hope. You’re I-CARES family is just here to help to make you a more competitive applicant in your chosen field. For a start, let us look at your concern and check one by one.
First, always remember that when you create a resume, it is not just simply putting all your personal information or adding colors in it. You have to take into consideration that the content or substance of the resume counts the most. Whatever is written in your resume is a reflection of your total qualifications. For a newly graduate like you, examine again yourself if you have created a very informative resume such as by putting your personal background, educational history, OJT/practicum, training or seminars attended, related skills etc. In this way, they will be able to assess your over-all qualifications.
Second, ask your self: Did I send it to the right company or I just simply sent it to companies, without even knowing if I am really fit for the position? That could also be one of the possibilities why until now, you are not able to receive a call from any of those companies.
Third, do you make follow up after sending out your resume or just wait for the result? It is not enough that you send out resume, sit around and wait for a call from the companies. You need to follow up your application and try to secure an interview appointment. As always, those who proactively follow up application increases his or her chances of reaching step #2 – interview.
Lastly, don’t limit yourself by looking at classified ads. Do networking. Meet people and inform them that you are looking for a job. Always take your resume with you and be ready to give it to prospective ‘network’ for employment.
All the things I mentioned are just some of the key points you have to consider in your job-search. Try to get more tips by reading articles on career specifically for job starters. Look at our archives of articles at Career 101.
Jackie, looking for a job is not really that easy. You have to have 3 P’s in your life… Patience, Perseverance and most of all, it has to be coupled with PRAYERS.
Wish you all the best and may God bless you always…
